The story of joe butch
Where history meats flavor, our restaurant was founded in a historical story.
Joe Butch was a man who owned a tavern in Philadelphia in the 1930s. Across the street from his tavern was a hot dog stand run by Pat Olivieri, who eventually created the Philly cheesesteak sandwich. As winter approached, Joe invited Pat to make his sandwiches inside the warm confines of the Tavern. Pat's sandwiches quickly gained popularity and eventually, more people were eating than drinking at the Tavern. In order to accommodate the demand for Pat's sandwiches, the owners of the Tavern cut a hole in the wall and started serving the sandwiches through it.
Thanks to Joe Butch's decision to allow Pat to serve his sandwiches in the Tavern, the Philly cheesesteak became even more popular and eventually, Pat took over the entire building. Joe Butch's role in the history of the cheesesteak may not be as well-known as Pat Olivieri's, but his impact was significant in helping to popularize the sandwich and ensure its lasting success.
